India is bracing for potential disruption to air travel with volcanic ash from Sunday’s (November 23, 2025) eruption of Ethiopia’s Hayli Gubbi volcano forecasted to drift towards mainland India.
The Hayli Gubbi volcano, located in Ethiopia’s Afar region about 800km northeast of Addis Ababa near the Eritrean border, erupted on Sunday (November 23, 2025) for several hours.
The DGCA has issued advisories urging airlines to strictly steer clear of affected altitudes and regions to ensure flight safety as volcanic ash can harm aircraft engines due to its abrasive, glass-like particles that melt at high temperatures. When ash is ingested, it can melt on hot engine components, harden into a glass-like substance, and stick to turbine blades.

Air India cancels flights; conducts inspection of aircraft
Air India has cancelled at least 11 flights since Monday and is carrying out precautionary checks on those planes that had flown over locations that had ash plumes due to the volcanic activity in Ethiopia.
Ash clouds from the recent eruption of the Hayli Gubbi volcano in Ethiopia are impacting flight operations, and there are reports suggesting that clouds are drifting towards the western parts of India.
Air India said it has cancelled four flights on Tuesday -- AI 2822 (Chennai-Mumbai), AI 2466 (Hyderabad-Delhi), AI 2444 / 2445 (Mumbai-Hyderabad-Mumbai) and AI 2471 / 2472 (Mumbai-Kolkata-Mumbai).
On Monday, it had cancelled seven international flights, including AI 106 (Newark-Delhi), AI 102 (New York (JFK)-Delhi) and AI 2204 (Dubai-Hyderabad) and AI 2290 (Doha-Mumbai).
Giving the flight details in a post on X on Tuesday, Air India said it is carrying out precautionary checks on those aircraft which had flown over certain geographical locations after the Hayli Gubbi volcanic eruption.
“Our ground teams across the network are keeping passengers updated on their flight status and are providing immediate assistance, including hotel accommodation. We are making every effort to arrange alternative travel at the earliest,” the airline said.

Delhi: No respite from toxic air amid fears of volcanic ash from Ethiopia
A thick haze hung over Delhi on Monday as the city’s air quality remained ‘very poor’ amid concerns that ash clouds from an volcanic activity in Ethiopia may worsen pollution levels in the region.
Hayli Gubbi, a shield volcano located in Ethiopia’s Afar region, erupted on Sunday, producing a large ash plume rising to approximately 14 km (45,000 ft) in altitude and spreading eastward across the Red Sea.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the ash clouds are drifting towards China and will move away from India by 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Forecast models indicated ash influence over Gujarat, Delhi-NCR, Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana on Tuesday, the IMD said.
According to the morning air quality bulletin issued by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the air quality index (AQI) in the national capital remained in the ‘very poor’ category on Thursday at 360, after recording 382 on Monday.

Ash clouds from volcanic activity in Ethiopia are drifting towards China and will move away from India by 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, the India Meteorological Department said.
Ash plumes from the recent eruption of the Hayli Gubbi volcano in Ethiopia impacted flight operations in India on Monday.
Forecast models indicated ash influence over Gujarat, Delhi-NCR, Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana on Tuesday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said the ash clouds are drifting towards China and will move away from Indian skies by 7:30 p.m.
According to the IMD, Hayli Gubbi, a shield volcano in Ethiopia’s Afar region, erupted on Sunday, producing a large ash plume that rose to around 14 km (45,000 ft).
The plume spread eastward across the Red Sea and towards the Arabian Peninsula and the Indian subcontinent.
“High-level winds carried the ash cloud from Ethiopia across the Red Sea to Yemen and Oman and further over the Arabian Sea towards western and northern India,” the IMD said in a statement It said the IMD closely monitored satellite imagery, advisories from Volcanic Ash Advisory Centres (VAACs) and dispersion models.

Two flights from Kochi cancelled due to volcanic eruption in Ethiopia
Two international flights scheduled to depart from Kochi airport were cancelled on Monday due to the volcanic eruption in Ethiopia, officials said.
According to Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL), flights bound for Jeddah and Dubai were cancelled as a precaution following the eruption.
The cancelled flights are Indigo service 6E1475 (Cochin–Dubai) and Akasa Air flight QP550 (Cochin–Jeddah).
Airport authorities said the flight operations will resume once the conditions improve.

Mumbai airport issues passenger advisory for volcanic eruption
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai issued a passenger advisory, noting that “A volcanic eruption in Ethiopia has affected airspace over parts of West Asia, which may impact some international routes. Passengers are advised to connect with their respective airlines to check the status of their flights before leaving for the airport.”
According to the Toulouse Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre (VAAC), the explosive eruption began around 8:30 am UTC on Sunday and marks the first activity from the nearly 10,000-year-dormant volcano. Authorities and airlines continue to track the ash cloud closely to ensure safe air travel.
The Toulouse VAAC said the eruption has now stopped, but a “large ash plume is moving toward northern India,” prompting meteorological agencies to closely monitor its trajectory. The volcano, situated in Ethiopia’s Erta Ale Range, last erupted around 10,000 to 12,000 years ago.
Airlines issued cautionary notices for passengers flying through the Middle East, though no advisories have been connected to the ash drift toward India.

Airlines on alert as Ethiopian volcano ash drifts toward India
IndiGo, Air India, and Akasa Air have assured passengers that safety remains their top priority following the eruption of Ethiopia’s Hayli Gubbi volcano, whose ash clouds are drifting towards parts of India.
IndiGo, in a statement shared on X, said, “Following the recent eruption of the #HayliGubbi volcano in #Ethiopia, ash clouds are reported to be drifting towards parts of western India. We understand that such news may cause concern, and we want to reassure you that your safety remains our highest priority. Our teams are closely tracking the situation in coordination with international aviation bodies.”
“We are fully prepared with all necessary precautions to ensure safe and reliable operations. Our 6E teams are available across all touchpoints to support you with any assistance you may need. We will continue to monitor the developments around the clock and keep you informed of any updates to help minimise inconvenience (if any),” the statement added.
Air India also issued a statement emphasising passenger safety, saying, “Following the volcanic eruption in Ethiopia, ash clouds have been observed over certain geographical regions. We are closely monitoring the situation and remain in constant touch with our operating crew. There is no major impact on Air India flights at this time.”
Further, the airline stated that they “will take all necessary steps under our precautionary plans to ensure the safety of our passengers, crew and aircraft, which remains our top priority. Our ground teams across the network will continue to support passengers and keep them updated on their flights.”
Akasa Air also stated that they are “closely monitoring the volcanic activity in Ethiopia and its potential impact on flight operations in nearby regions.”
“Our teams will continue to assess the situation in compliance with international aviation advisories and safety protocols and take necessary actions as required. At Akasa Air, passenger safety and well-being are our utmost priority,” the airline wrote on X.

Ethiopian volcano erupts after 12,000-year dormancy
A volcano in Ethiopia’s northeastern region erupted for the first time in nearly 12,000 years, sending thick plumes of smoke up to 14km into the sky, the Toulouse Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre (VAAC) said.
The Hayli Gubbi volcano, located in Ethiopia’s Afar region about 800km northeast of Addis Ababa near the Eritrean border, erupted on Sunday (November 23, 2025) for several hours.
The volcano, which rises about 500m in altitude, sits within the Rift Valley, a zone of intense geological activity where two tectonic plates meet.
Ash clouds from the volcano drifted over Yemen, Oman, India, and northern Pakistan, the VAAC said.
In videos shared on social media, which AFP could not immediately verify, a thick column of white smoke can be seen rising.
The Smithsonian Institution’s Global Volcanism Program said Hayli Gubbi has had no known eruptions during the Holocene, which began around 12,000 years ago at the end of the last Ice Age.
